Texas Elevator License
In Texas, elevators, escalators, wheelchair lifts and related equipment are regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) under Health & Safety Code Chapter 754 and 16 TAC Chapter 74. What most people call an "elevator license" is TDLR's Certificate of Compliance.
How to get and keep your certificate
1. Annual inspection. A TDLR-registered elevator inspector inspects your equipment every year.
2. Inspection report. You get a report that lists anything that needs to be corrected.
3. File with TDLR. The inspection report and fee go to TDLR. TDLR's step-by-step instructions are here: How to Obtain a Certificate of Compliance.
4. Post your certificate. Once TDLR issues your Certificate of Compliance, keep it posted as TDLR requires.
Your ELBI number
Every building with regulated equipment has an ELBI number. You'll find it on your latest inspection report, and you can look up your equipment in TDLR's elevator search.
Why it matters
Running equipment without a current certificate can lead to TDLR penalties, insurance problems and downtime. Staying on schedule keeps your riders safe and your building compliant.
